In the spirit of armchair travelers everywhere, the Voyager Ensemble explores a new culture each year by combining standard repertoire along with contemporary works by composers from the region. This year’s concert focuses on Puerto Rico with directors Airi Yoshioka (violin) and David Yang (viola) joined by eminent Puerto Rican musicians José Miguel Cueto (violin) and Kelvin Diaz Inoa (cello).

The pieces on the program are stunningly evocative of the natural beauty, legends, and dance forms of the island and nostalgia abounds in each work. Each composer pays tribute to their homeland through employment of various musical elements such as coquí melodies (frog songs), bomba rhythms, and even the national anthem. Some of the works express political/social viewpoints, nationalism and the celebration of its rich and varied heritage.

The Voyager Ensemble features José Miguel Cueto, violin; Airi Yoshioka, violin; David Yang, viola; and Kelvin Diaz Inoa, cello.
