Y:ART Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its thirteenth exhibition, welcoming new, hot artwork for the Baltimore summer heat. Y:ART is thrilled to be partnered with the Artscape Gallery Network for this remarkable exhibition. The opening reception will be held Saturday, June 24, 2017 from 6pm-9pm.
Y:ART’s Hot Juried Show has been an open call for work with the intention of welcoming fresh, cutting-edge artwork that reaffirms Y:ART’s mission to support and promote local artists. All of the artists that are included represent the finest artwork Baltimore has to offer, each contributing an innovative personal perspective to the collective body of work. Jurors for the exhibition include world-renowned photographer, Connie Imboden, founding editor of Bmore Art, Cara Ober, and owner/curator of Y:ART Gallery, Juli Yensho. Jurors have selected a notably refined group of artists, all of whom displaying an exquisite level of skill, altogether forming the hottest show in Baltimore!
About the Jurors:
Connie Imboden is a Baltimore-based world-renowned photographer that has used the image to examine, distort, and redefine the human body for over 30 years. Using the reflective, and sometimes altering, qualities of water and mirrors, her images create new forms that are at once mythological, archetypal, and expressive. They are beautiful yet simultaneously disturbing and elegant, though often haunting. Seen through the camera and free from darkroom or computer enhancement, Imboden’s images display the strangeness of reality in an age of digital manipulation.
As President of the William G. Baker Jr Memorial Fund, Imboden has also played an active role in the advancement of the Baltimore arts scene. In 2008, she was a co-founder of the prestigious Baker Artist Awards, supporting local artists and promoting regional excellence in the arts. “Witnessing the art community flourish in Baltimore has been nothing short of inspiring”, she says.
Cara Ober is a Baltimore-based painter, teacher, curator, and writer who exhibits her work locally and nationally. She earned an MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2005 and a BA in fine arts from the American University. Her mixed-media work encompasses the mediums of drawing, painting, and printmaking. “My visual work has always included a mash-up of decorative structures, culled from vintage wallpaper, textiles, ancient artifacts, and home décor. I combine unrelated images and text to form layers of (mis)understanding, reinterpreting sentimental imagery through drawing, painting, and printmaking.”
In addition to her own work, Ober is one of Baltimore’s most active arts-evangelists, most notably as the online arts and culture editor at The Urbanite Magazine and as a founding editor of BMoreArt, the city’s premier online resource for visual artists. In addition, she has penned art reviews for Art Papers, ARTnews, Hyperallergic, and BurnAway. Ober also teaches at MICA, Towson University and Johns Hopkins.
Juli Yensho is best known for her curatorial work, creating incredible marriages of artwork in Y:ART gallery. She is responsible for breathing life into the gallery and store; enduring a substantial renovation to convert a vacant 6,000 square foot building into one of the hottest galleries in Baltimore. Since its opening in October 2015, the gallery space has quickly become a premier destination for high-quality artwork and has contributed immensely to the thriving Highlandtown Arts District. With a clear vision and determined attitude, Yensho is a testament to hard work and dedication to the arts.
A retired pastry chef, Yensho has devoted her personal life to creative exploration. Yensho has abundant experience working as a decorative painter in the Baltimore and Washington area. Most recently, she has worked as a scenic painter for television and movies based in Baltimore. Yensho’s creativity trickles into her work as a curator, with an immaculate eye for combining complementary artists in both Y:ART’s gallery and store.
Y:ART Gallery & Fine Gifts is a labor of love, brought to life by Julia Yensho on October 10th, 2015.
