Rotterdam Photo – the fifth edition – is searching for photographers to showcase their work to a broad audience from 6 till 9 february 2020. During Art Rotterdam Week the Kop van Zuid is a true ‘photography hub’ with the sea container village at the Deliplein as its surprising centre. The selected photographers get the opportunity to showcase their work alongside our curated exhibitions and an elaborate fringe programme. Together, Rotterdam Photo presents a contemporary view on photography in context of the theme TRANSITIONS. Photographers can apply until november 10th.

During Art Rotterdam Week, Rotterdam Photo offers a variety of presentations at a container village at Deliplein that includes presentations of independent photographers, photo collectives and organizations. At the central square of Katendrecht we connect these photographers to a broad audience, offering an eclectic mix of visual culture manifestations: from photography exhibitions, screen presentations, video works and analog practices. In 2019, more than 5.000 people visited Rotterdam Photo.

Application and selection

If you want to join our growing community, please submit a selection of your images inspired by the theme TRANSITIONS before 10 November 2019 at Our committee will make a selection of participating photographers and invite them to showcase their work at Rotterdam Photo. If you are selected, a container will be designated to you against a non-profit fee. By doing so we want to give the independent photography community an opportunity to exhibit during the hustle and bustle of the Art Rotterdam Week. As a small independent organization that consists of passionate photography freelancers, we want to create a platform that caters to a wide spectrum of photographers.

Rotterdam Photo’s theme of the year 2020 is TRANSITIONS. The world has reached a historical turning point: see the rise of populism, Brexit, the Trump era and all the (humanitarian) crises that emerge from that. The near future is uncertain. These crises, or better: transitions, will form the red line of Rotterdam Photo 2020. Transitions as processes or periods of change from one condition to the next, call out to reflect. In our society we see transitions of all sorts, gender transitions to energy transitions. These transitions aren’t separate phenomenons, but are in fact inextricably linked and interwoven. However, as Professor of Sustainability Jan Rotmans brings: we don’t live in a time of transitions, but in a era-transition. The world seems to be changing more and more into a comprehensive system in which everything depends on everything else.

Photographers are invited to apply with work relating to this year’s theme. Rotterdam Photo’s goal is to show a diverse selection of visual storytellers from all over the world that deal with multidisciplinary methods to signify the complexity of the present times ánd the medium of photography.
