The Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) is pleased to announce the $500 Covington Emerging Artist Award for 2018, to be presented by HorseSpirit Arts Gallery of Ellicott City to an emerging artist exhibiting in HCAC’s HoCo Open 2018 exhibit in January 2018.
Named in honor of Ms. Mable Covington Holliday, a talented artist and art teacher who believed that all people have innate creative abilities, the award will be given to an emerging artist whose work demonstrates not only technical excellence but also echoes Mable Covington Holliday’s belief in the goodness of humanity and the healing power of art.
In the late 1950’s, Ms. Covington built an art studio outside her rural home in eastern North Carolina, where she welcomed, encouraged, and taught women from her community — many of whom had never expressed themselves outside their roles as wife and mother — to embrace their creativity through oil painting, ceramics, quilting, clothing design and fabrication, and other art forms. She ran her studio for over 25 years. Ms. Covington’s granddaughter, Robin Holliday, owner of HorseSpirit Arts Gallery, established the Covington Emerging Artist Award to honor her grandmother’s legacy of encouraging and supporting artistic development and creativity in others.
“For 36 years, the Arts Council has developed programs and partnerships that foster the arts in our community,” said HCAC Executive Director Coleen West. “We are delighted to partner with HorseSpirit Arts Gallery to continue that legacy through the Covington Emerging Artist Award. It is so important to invest in the artists of tomorrow. We are grateful for the opportunity that the Covington Award provides us to recognize and support an emerging artist at a crucial time in their career.”
Artists working in all media who have been exhibiting and/or selling their art for less than three years are eligible to receive the Covington Award. The award recipient will be selected by a panel consisting of Robin Holliday and two other HorseSpirit Arts Gallery artists. Artists affiliated with HorseSpirit Arts Gallery are ineligible.
HoCo Open is a salon-style, non-juried exhibit showcasing visual artists of all skill levels aged 18 years and older who live, work, or study in Howard County. Previously a biennial offering, the exhibit’s popularity has led to it becoming an annual event. Eligible artists are invited to bring one piece of original artwork, completed in the last two years, to the Center for the Arts on January 4, 2018 between 4:30 and 6:30pm. The exhibit typically features a variety of visual art styles and media, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and more. HoCo Open 2018 will run from January 12 – February 23. The presentation of the Covington Award will take place at the free reception on January 19 from 6-8pm (snow date: January 26).
