Annual Call for Artists: 2016 Juried Group Exhibitions

School 33 Art Center is now accepting submissions from artists for our 2016 juried group exhibitions, to take place July 1 – August 27, 2016 and September 9 – October 29, 2016 in our first floor Main Gallery. The call for entry is open to visual artists working in any medium. Through this open call, School 33 aims to present new work by emerging and established artists from the United States and abroad. Our jurors will select between four and seven artists for each exhibition based upon individual artistic merit and curatorial vision. School 33 Art Center and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts will produce all related press materials, and will host an opening reception and coordinate exhibition-related programming.
Our 2016 Jurors
José Ruiz is a Peruvian-born curator and artist. He received an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in Painting and Latin American Studies from University of Maryland, College Park. Ruiz is founder of Furthermore, a research, design, production and development lab in Washington, DC. He is co-founder, co-director, and co-curator of Present Company- a Brooklyn NY-based gallery. He has curated numerous exhibitions including exhibitions for the Bronx River Art Center, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Queens Museum of Art, El Museo de Arte de El Salvador, and P.P.O.W. Gallery in New York. He has shown his work in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and internationally in countries including Egypt, Ireland, Mexico, Japan, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, South Africa, South Korea, and the Netherlands. Ruiz’s practice has been the subject of various articles, including articles in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, ARTnews, Arte Al Dia, Artnet, and The Washington Post. He has taught and lectured widely and won awards including grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation. Ruiz is currently a Professor in MICA’s Curatorial Practice MFA program.
Cynthia Connolly is a curator, photographer, letterpress printer, and artist living in Arlington, Virginia. She graduated from The Corcoran College of Art and Design, and Auburn University’s Rural Studio. She served as Visual Arts Curator of Arlington Virginia’s sixty thousand square-foot arts center, Artisphere, and now continues as Arlington’s Special Projects Curator. Previously, Connolly worked for Dischord Records, booking the avant-garde performance venue, d.c. space. In 1988 she published Banned in DC: Photos and Anecdotes From the DC Punk Underground (79–85) through her independent press Sun Dog Propaganda. An internationally shown and prolific artist, Connolly’s photographic works, postcards, and books were exhibited throughout the US and Europe as part of the exhibition Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture from 2004–2009, establishing her as a pioneer in DIY culture. Her photography is in many private collections, including those of Michael Stipe, Nick Hornby, Ian Mackaye and Aaron Rose, as well as the collections at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Smithsonian Museum of American History, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
• Individual visual artists and collaborative teams working in any medium may apply.
• Artists should only apply with existing, available, and accessible artworks.
• Artists who apply should be available to participate in either of the exhibitions. Artists cannot be selected for more than one exhibition.
• Employees of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts are ineligible to apply.
• Artists are fully responsible for making all necessary arrangements for the delivery and pick-up of their artwork.
• Late and incomplete entries will not be considered.
Application and Exhibition Timeline:
• Call for Entry applications due by Monday, February 1, 2016.
• Notifications will go out to artists on Monday, March 4, 2016.
• Two exhibitions will take place on the following dates: (1) Summer, 2016: July 1 – August 27, 2016; (2) Fall 2016: September 9 – October 29, 2016. The artwork delivery and installation period for each exhibition will take place 1.5 weeks before each opening. An opening reception, dates TBA will take place for each exhibition.
Complete submissions should include:
• Personal information (name, home and email addresses, phone number, and website url where applicable)
• 5 -10 .jpg images of artwork, no larger than 5 MB each. Please label works by last name, then first name followed by the number the image is on your image list (for example: smithjohn01.jpg, smithjohn02.jpg, etc.).
• Artists submitting time-based works may submit up to 10 minutes of video. in .mov or .mp4 format, no larger than 200MB.
• Current CV / artist’s resume
• Artist Statement
• Image description list including title, date, medium and dimensions in .doc or .pdf format.
