Pulse at EMP Collective
Thursday, August 14th at 8PM – $5

This month’s Pulse features four Baltimore artists: Emily Hall, Lucia Treasure, Ren Pepitone, and Kate Ewald.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Emily Hall – Do Clean Things to Me
A neat and tidy response to Marina Abramovic’s Rhythm 0. Early performance art was blood-streaked and dirty. Watch Emily prove that performance art can be squeaky clean fun! Emily Hall is a Baltimore-based theatre and performance artist. Locally, she presented her work at Centerstage’s 50Fest, Transmodern Festival, Black Cherry Puppet Theatre, Strand Theater, and various other venues. Recently, Hall was the live feed operator for Mabou Mines’s La Divina Caricatura at La MaMa ETC; previously, she was a videography intern for Performance Space 122. In September, Hall will have an installation at the Station North Tool Library as part of Akimbo Festival; in October, she will be directing an adaptation of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover for Annex Theater at Canteen. She received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Theatre from Towson University and is currently adjunct faculty at Carroll Community College.

Lucia Treasure – Aloette
A clown routine unfolding to the tune of an old and dangerous childhood song pratfalls through the struggle for freedom of the heart. Lucia A Treasure is a Baltimore girl, performer and professional pigeon chaser. She is a member of the Annex Theater company, the co-founder of Hole In The Wall Cabaret, and her original performance work has been presented at Theatre Project, An Die Musik and the Holy Underground in Baltimore, and Performance Space 122 in New York, where she also had the privilege of being mentored by the great performance artist Penny Arcade. Her current work explores the conversation we conduct between our child and adult selves. She would like to inquire about your first memory.

Ren Pepitone – Bathtub Gin
Ren Pepitone is a Baltimore academic who is taking exploration of bodies and consumption from the page to the flesh.

Kate Ewald – Aggressive Intimate
Kate Ewald is a time-based media artist and curator living in Baltimore, MD. With diverse interests in live & expanded cinema, classical structuralist filmmaking, intermedia, mechanical accidents, and homemade video feedback rigs, many of her works violently challenge the conventional assumptions of the spectator as they relate to expectations of narrative, perception, and time. Her curatorial, critical, and academic work is inspired by regular artistic practice/play and a ritualistic study of theoretical philosophies.

ABOUT PULSE: Run by Carly J Bales, Pulse is a regularly-occurring salon for the discussion and development of performance art work in Baltimore. The salons feature 2-4 performance artists a month and are open to everyone. The aim of these salons are to provide a consistent outlet for performance artists to create new work and connect with fellow performers. Pulse also welcomes the larger public to experience and participate in the development of these works-in-progress. Building off of these salons, EMP Collective hosts larger, curated performance events quarterly.

a r t + c r u s h at Platform Gallery on Friday, August 15 from 7-10 pm

Platform Gallery 116 W Mulberry St, Baltimore, Maryland 21201

Platform Gallery is pleased to present a r t + c r u s h, on view at 116 W Mulberry Street. This group exhibition will highlight the concept of the art crush- a phenomenon where an artist would admire, follow, and be inspired by another artist. Following the different ages and stages of art crushes, this exhibition will include the works by painters: Xinyi Cheng, Benjamin Degen, Louis Fratino, and David Humphrey.

Crushes are more popularly recalled as painfully beautiful experiences of infatuation. They are loyal loves from afar that usually end in some sort of odd admiration. Due to the expanse of the internet, crushes can now blossom without even the slightest of communication. To develop an art crush, an artist must be faithfully dedicated to support and awe of another artist’s work and studio practice. Artists have always looked to their superiors and peers for inspiration and guidance. Some have gone so far as to create their own adopted family of generations of past artists that they believe will continue to influence their work. a r t + c r u s h is an investigation into the relationships between the crusher and the crushed.

Exhibition opens August 15th at 7 pm and runs to September 10th. Opening is August 15th from 7 to 10.
