On Wednesday evening, enjoy an artist talk with painter Amy Sherald and Curator Dr. Michelle Joan Wilkinson at the Reginald Lewis Museum, in conjunction with Sherald’s solo show. On Friday, head to Lease Agreement, a house gallery in Ednor Gardens, for Rubens Ghenov: An evening raga with bolasettvas and other nonterminused short stories. Saturday afternoon, go to MICA’s Brown Center at 2 pm for an artist talk by MacArthur Fellow and photographer An-My Lê, currently exhibiting in the BMA’s Front Room. (The talk was moved to MICA because of BMA construction.) Saturday night boasts several events, including two exhibits at Current: John Zimmerman in the front gallery and ‘Cars Are Real,’ the first exhibition of a Baltimore-based collaborative publishing project, in the project space. An evening raga with bolasettvas and other nonterminused short stories features an installation of painting and sculpture by Philadelphia based artist, Rubens Ghenov. Foregrounded in a lyrical literary impulse Ghenov’s sources form, content, and atmosphere from research including the film The Music Room and Indian classical music. The diverse origins of this reference material meet, sometimes cordially, other times in collision. In order to negotiate these intersections, Ghenov acts as both artist and author as he works as though in concert with the ghosted voice of a fictional creator. The resulting works obscure the conceptual process of their making: their presence, it would seem, have erased the process from which they were produced leaving viewers aware of a trace of something utterly specific and somehow familiar, yet decidedly unknowable.
The reception for An evening raga with bolasettvas and other nonterminused short stories will be held on Friday, October 11, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Lease Agreement, 3718 Ellerslie Ave, Baltimore, Maryland. Rubens Ghenov was born in São Paulo, Brazil and currently works in Philadelphia. He received his BFA at Tyler School of Art and his MFA from RISD, both in painting. He has exhibited at the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia; Gelman Gallery, Providence; Alogon Gallery, Chicago; and most recently TSA Brooklyn.

No Matter brings in to question the role of the artist in the ever-burgeoning digital world, while examining the human condition. Zimmerman operates through a defeatist lens, exploring our society’s seemingly endless proliferation of images – focusing on often overlooked or under-appreciated beauty.
Additionally, the works in this exhibition move toward metaphysical territory, displaying the exchanges between the human and the multiple-image. No Matter shows us how our social and philosophical understandings of humanity have shifted, swept along in an exponentially growing flood of visual content.

Cars Are Real is the self-titled first exhibition of a Baltimore-based collaborative publishing project. Through an iterative editorial/curatorial process where the incumbent members of the collaborative select the following season’s participants, and so on, Cars Are Real seeks to trace the development of contemporary writing. As such, the gallery show presents a snapshot of several distinctive approaches to writing/art, alongside the publication and performance of new works.
Participants:
Laura A. Warman is a performance artist and poet. She is responsible for the Pittsburgh car service, Warman Jitney, and the subscription-based art work, Warman Monthly.
Josef Kaplan is the author of Democracy Is Not for the People (Truck Books, 2012). He lives in Brooklyn.
Lesser Gonzalez Alvarez is a multi-disciplinary artist.
Alicia Puglionesi is a writer and historian of science.
R. M. O’Brien is the curator of the WORMS reading series, and editor and publisher of WORMS Quarterly.
Alejandro Ventura is the author of Puerto Rico (Brooklyn Arts Press, 2012).

BMA PRESENTS ARTIST TALK + RECEPTION WITH ACCLAIMED AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER AN-MY LÊ
Meet the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” winner on Saturday, October 12 at MICA’s Brown Center
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is pleased to bring acclaimed American photographer An-My Lê to Baltimore for an artist talk and reception held at the Maryland Insitute College of Art’s (MICA) Brown Center on Saturday, October 12 at 2 p.m. Led by BMA Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs Ann Shafer, the discussion will explore Lê’s fascinating perspective of the military and her creative process. Audience members are invited to ask questions and continue the conversation over coffee. The event is co-sponsored by the BMA’s Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art and Print, Drawing & Photograph Society and MICA’s Department of Photography. There is no admission charge and all are welcome to attend.
Front Room: An-My Lê, on view at the BMA October 9 – February 23, 2014, features 21 compelling black-and-white and color photographs from four series of the artist’s work. A 2012 winner of the MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” Lê examines the multi-layered roles the military plays across a variety of settings without focusing on actual combat or war zones. Regarding herself as a landscape photographer, she frames her subjects on immense backdrops to highlight the tension between the power of the natural world and the force of humans and their machines. Lêand her family came to the United States as political refugees in 1975 during the final year of the Vietnam War, which has had a strong impact on her work.
Lê (born 1960, Vietnam) received BAS and MS degrees in biology from Stanford University (1981, 1985) and an MFA from Yale University (1993). She has received many awards, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (1997) and the New York Foundation for the Arts (1996). She has had one-person exhibitions at Dia Beacon (2006), and at PS1/MoMA (2002), and a traveling exhibition was organized and circulated by the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College, Chicago (2006). She was included in MoMA’s New Photography series in 1997.
