Imagine being caught by the penetrating gaze of the mythical Leda and then struck by the beauty and power of her ravishing swan. Or experience the subliminal disquiet stirred when confronted with an iconic black Madonna haloed with nail like objects, which could be radiant light or a crown of pain. Such ironic juxtapositions are the mainstay of City Arts Gallery upcoming exhibition, Altered Truths, Fractured Myths featuring works of two Baltimore-based and nationally exhibited artists, Oletha DeVane and Jessica Damen. Through a variety of two and three-dimensional media both artists will address the mysterious convergence of cultures, race and myths. With sensuous snakes and swans, expressive brush strokes and layered prints, DeVane and Damen are able to seduce their viewers to contemplate the uncomfortable and unspeakable. Their mutual interests in goddess iconography and the subversive and violent nature of patriarchy are depicted with brush paintings on paper.
Altered Truths, Fractured Myths is curated by artist Stephen Towns. This is the fourth exhibition in the newly developed City Arts Gallery and fulfills the mission of City Arts to include a diverse range of artwork from a variety of local artists.
