Temporal Typographies opens October 7, 6-8 at Goucher's Silber Gallery
Elena Volkova
Jennifer Gonzalez
In the art exhibition Temporal Topographies, nine artists; Becky Alprin, Amanda Burnham, Samantha Gainsburg, Alexander Groshong, Hannah Naomi Kim, Even La Londe, Cathy Last-Mann, Elena Volkova and Adam Weir explore the liminal space where time intersects with both the built and natural environment.
Each artist employ’s distinct methods of inquiry drawing from psychological and physical space and conflations of the two. They study place, mapping features, shapes and surfaces of land such as mountains, rivers and forests, constructed exterior features of cities such as buildings, highways and fences, and interior features of homes such as doorways, fireplaces and windows. Most of the artists break these features down into small segments removing them from a larger context. The passing of time is implied as buildings appear to dissolve and crumble or seem to be consumed by nature altogether. Structures become fragments, visible traces separated from any specific setting or time. These remnants create open ended narratives leaving the viewer with a sense of uncertainty and wonder. Time and space become inextricably linked, ever-changing, shifting, fleeting.

Maryland Art Place Announces Move to Join Westside Arts District
The Board of Trustees of Maryland Art Place (MAP) has voted unanimously to relocate MAP headquarters to its original home at 218 West Saratoga Street in Baltimore. MAP considers the move a tremendous opportunity to join other stakeholders in energizing the development of a sustainable Westside Arts District. “We’re thrilled to be part of this exciting endeavor,” says Cathy Byrd, MAP’s Executive Director.
The change of venue will give MAP room to expand programming—positioning the organization to deepen relationships in the Westside community and to shape the MAP- owned 20,000 square foot building into a multi-level center for creativity. MAP’s goal is to work with public and private stakeholders to design a unique facility that supports working artists and enriches the surrounding neighborhood by providing classrooms, artists’ studios, technology resources and exhibition space.
Cathy Byrd, Director of MAP
Situated in Power Plant Live! since 2001, MAP has presented a highly successful series of exhibitions, programs and events in one of Baltimore’s premiere art spaces. Over the past year, MAP has expanded programming outside the gallery walls, bringing art to the public through installation and performance projects. MAP’s leaders believe that the move to Saratoga Street, and MAP’s engagement in the Westside community, will broaden the audience for contemporary art.
“This is an important moment for MAP to support the expansion of Baltimore’s vibrant arts community into the Westside. MAP’s programming will enrich and transform the district,” says MAP’s board chair, Suzi Cordish.
On November 12, 2010, MAP presents its fall fundraiser, Pop-Up Gala, the first event in the newly reclaimed first floor exhibition space at 218 West Saratoga Street. A Pop Star Dance Party will follow in MAP’s 14Karat Cabaret downstairs.
Connecting artists with communities since 1981, Maryland Art Place (MAP) is a Baltimore-based nonprofit contemporary art center. MAP energizes the region’s cultural environment through dynamic exhibitions, interactive events, educational programs and public art projects. Information: mdartplace.org | 410 962 8565.

41 Miles North bridges the distance between two cities. Washington, DC is the heart of US politics and red tape with little industrial history. Baltimore has a crumbling infrastructure with industrial spaces transforming into hubs of culture. Two beltways with very different “insides,” the title speaks of the distance from The White House to Area 405.

Caleb Stine’s newest album explores an evolving and eroding America by Cara Ober
September 21, 2010
“A truly great song should be able to stand on its own around a campfire,” says Caleb Stine, Baltimore’s preeminent singer-songwriter of original folk anthems. Stine has drawn comparisons to artists from Townes Van Zandt to Uncle Tupelo to Woody Guthrie. But his unique brand of country-meets-city storytelling branches out into a new genre—call it contemporary Americana or urban roots.
“Music today is full of so many novelty sounds; it’s so overly processed,” Stine says. “Anyone can use Garage Band to build up a song on their computer. However, if it contains strong ideas, a song doesn’t need a band or extraneous sounds. It can stand on its own.”

HIgh Zero Festival's 12th Year Anniversary September 23 - 26

What is High Zero?High Zero is the premier festival of Improvised, Experimental music on the East Coast, being fully devoted to new collaborations between the most inspired improvisors from around the world.
Lasting two weeks in total, the festival brings together 28 core musicians each year, but also involves a much larger subculture of musicians in Baltimore and on the East Coast. Unlike many related festivals, High Zero is not narrow in terms of sensibility or subculture, but rather widely inclusive of all the different types of experimental music-making in the moment. The fact that half of the festival's core participants are from Baltimore speaks to the depth of Baltimore's experimental music subculture, which in recent years has grown to be one of the richest cities in the country for experimental art.

Baltimore City Paper features new online publication: What Weekly

Justin Allen and Brooke Hall came up with the idea for What Weekly in bed.
Accentuate the Positive: What Weekly seeks to eliminate the negative and support local arts. By Hannah Bruchman
PUBLISHED: AUGUST 18, 2010, Baltimore City Paper
Any new entrepreneur can attest: Starting a business is tough. The paperwork, the planning, not to mention even coming up with that one brilliant idea, thought up at board meetings, over drinks at a fancy restaurant—or in bed, drinking your morning coffee.
At least, that was the case with Brooke Hall and Justin Allen, the couple responsible for What Weekly, a local multimedia web site dedicated to documenting Baltimore’s art scene. After a year of throwing around ideas and brainstorming, something clicked for Allen and Hall: to start an artsy web site combining elements such as photography, video, and news stories, forming a completely new kind of news outlet—a sort of “hybrid,” according to erstwhile City Paper contributor Hall. The site was officially launched in January.

Christian Marclay | Pia Fries | Wilhelm Mundt | FUSION |
September 16 – November 4th, 2010
Reception, September 16th 6-8pm
Fusion: a merging of diverse, distinct, or separate elements into a unified whole.
These three international super stars of Art come together in a three person exhibition at Goya Contemporary titled “Fusion,” curated by Amy Raehse.
Whitney Museum of American Art’s current exhibitor, Christian Marclay, explores the fusion of fine art and audio cultures. Wilhelm Mundt literally fuses the discarded elements of his studio practice into new objects. Pia Fries (former studio assistant to Gerhard Richter) fuses elements of silkscreen & photography alongside, under, and against fantastic piles of caked, troweled, scraped and smeared oil paint.
The three artists create a chain reaction of associations. All three can be said to be enveloped in the process of fusion in different and yet connected ways.
Goya Contemporary is free and open to the public.
Hrs: Tue – Fri, 10 – 5:30 and Saturdays by appointment.

Parts of a Whole: Fusion at Goya Contemporary, Sept 16–Nov 4 with a reception Sept 16 by Cara Ober. To read the article at Urbanite.com, click here.

Doubting Thomases at Nudashank September 10

Doubting Thomases
Curated by Alex Lukas
September 10th - October 8th 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, September 10 from 7 - 10 pm
Doubting Thomases brings together eight Philadelphia-based artists who utilize printmaking techniques and self-printed materials, generally thought of as mediums of multiple, and incorporate them into one-of-a-kind works. With strong backgrounds in ‘zine making, silk screening in basements, and feeding the wrong type of paper through the Xerox machine at Kinkos, the artists in this exhibition are well versed in figuring out how to do it for themselves. It is this work ethic, coupled with a knowledge of traditional printmaking techniques and etiquette, that inspire the artists' rejection of the notion that printed materials are strictly intended for duplication and therefore inherently less valuable.
Loosely centered around the Philadelphia artist collective Space 1026, Doubting Thomases includes work in which the artists have screen printed over drawings, drawn over prints, cut up their own prints and collaged them back together, painted over photographs, and pretty much done whatever else works knowing that the result will be hard to define and not really caring. Please just don’t call it “mixed media” or ask what the edition size is.

Donald Baechler Lecture Monday, Sept. 13 at MICA at noon
Abstract artist Donald Baechler ’77 (painting) creates his paintings in 3-D with additions of mixed materials, often including his own photographs. Playing off the themes of childhood whimsy and pop art, he draws also from the realms of folk art, outsider art, and the New York School. After graduating from MICA, he went to Cooper Union for his MFA, and then decided he needed a break from New York and went to Germany for a year. Baechler found his place in the 1980s New York art scene among icons he considered his friends: Tony Shafrazi, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. At MICA, he will talk about current projects, his processes, and his sources of inspiration. The Monday Artist at Noon Lecture Series is organized by the drawing, general fine arts, painting, and printmaking Senior Thesis program. The first fortress started with a wall. Behind that wall, survivalists sat prepared for future disruptions, accidents, disasters—building structures that would help them endure, or just simply disappear. Contemporary interior spaces—malls, fluorescent-lit schools, art galleries—have undergone what Virilio sees as a smoothing process, with the elevator succeeding the stairway. This erosion of resistance dampens the tactile link between people and their surroundings.
Strength arises from disequilibrium. A Greek hilltop village has produced growing numbers of centenarians due to their working on slanted surface; the steep grade of their surroundings adds a measure of tension to all aspects of daily life. Resistance builds future resistance. Physical difficulty heightens our senses and activates our sense of agency. It places us in movement and teaches us about the nature of our bodies, which are always in the process of restructuring themselves.
The fortress, among other military earthworks, was left behind as a reminder of ancient warfare. Amid dense brush, spoiled building materials, animals forming back into packs, what canned products will still taste good? Are we in control of what we produce?
The art object will slowly recede into the Earth, creating a strange footprint, while the Earth object resurfaces, changed.
The artifacts and ideas within these walls, in this show, reflect potential collisions and the unknowable nature of the future. These artists expand the field of the unknown by projecting their purpose toward a specific future—drawing maps, sending out signals, and demarcating passages from their personal sites of experience.
To occupy one's own agency is to take control of one's alienation. To be an artist is to be in charge of one's life.
In case of fire, plague, wreckage-— the artwork will need to relocate to higher ground.

Readsboro: Regina Tumasella at Metro Gallery Sept. 9

Readsboro: paintings by Regina Tumasella
September 9th 2010 – October 23rd 2010
Regina was born in the Catskill Mountains of New York. After studying painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Regina traveled to Ecuador to study with artists for 3 months. In Regina’s current work she is mapping her perceptions of specific places through the mingling of color in layers of paint. As she continuously evolves her fingerprint on the work, she is connected to and inspired by the vast, rapidly changing world. Regina’s work considers the mood and hue that’s left on the mind after encountering place.
The opening is September 9th at 7pm w/ music by Music from Erik Spangler, Jason Sloan (guitar, electronics), Matt Frazao (guitar), Susan Alcorn (pedal steel guitar), and John Dierker (clarinet, bass clarinet).
Metro Gallery is located at 1700 North Charles St in the Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Please go to www.themetrogallery.net for more information.
